Vega Sicilia Unico 2009 750ml
Wine Advocate-Ribera del Duero – “” deep crimson-colored with an ethereal perfume aided by its extended upbringing. Aromas of Asian spices, lavender, incense, truffle, and confiture of black fruits are compelling. Sweet, forward, rich, and hedonistic,””
Planted on predominantly limestone soil reminiscent of Burgundy, the Vega Sicilia vineyard produces one of the greatest wines in the world. Contrary to what one might think at first glance, the name of this mythical wine has no connection with Sicily but comes from the Santos Sicilia family, owners of the vineyard before 1864, Vega meaning “valley” in Spanish. On this 1000 hectare property, which can rise to 700 meters above sea level above the Duero (or Douro) river, 210 hectares are used for vines. Today, Bordeaux grape varieties have become complements (20% cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec), and tempranillo has regained its rights (80%). The climate is continental, with an Atlantic influence. The peculiarity of Vega Sicilia lies in its unique breeding in the world, which remains subject to many controversies. Indeed, matured in large oak barrels the first year, Vega Sicilia Unico 2009 is transferred to barrels of different size and age. Subsequently, an aging period of five to ten years softens the character of this wine of phenomenal power. As an indication, note that some old vintages were aged for more than 25 years in barrels. From now on, the property operates a more “classic” breeding limited to ten years. Vega Sicilia Unico 2009, full-bodied, full-bodied and complex, develops intense aromas of black fruits and spices. Note the existence of Unico Reserva Especial, made up of several different vintages that can reach up to twenty years of age.
